BFAMI is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to raise funds to support educational programmes run by the art museums of Israel. These programmes share the rich artistic culture and history of Israel alongside prominent international contemporary art, with future generations across all strata of society.

In recent years we have focused our fund-raising endeavours to support educational programmes targeted at more vulnerable social groups such as children from deprived backgrounds, terminally ill children in hospitals and new immigrants suffering from negative social stigma to name a few. Together with these we are proud to continue our support of programmes reaching the gifted and talented, as well as Israeli soldiers. In addition, each year we allocate funds towards acquisition of artwork for the Israel Museum or the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Founded in 1947, BFAMI originally obtained funds solely for the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and later for the Israel Museum, Jerusalem when it was founded in 1965. We have since expanded our support to educational programmes run by additional contemporary art museums in Israel such as the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Petach Tikva Museum of Art, Haifa Museum of Art, Janco Dada Museum, Nachum Gutman Museum of Art and the Museums of Bat Yam (MoBY).

Summer Exhibition 2011

7 June—15 August 2011

RA Website

About this year’s exhibition:

Royal Academicians Christopher Le Brun and Michael Craig-Martin will play significant roles in developing the main characteristics of this year’s exhibition, whilst Piers Gough and Alan Stanton will shape the architecture room.

This year the Selection Committee has agreed that there will be no theme. They have instead decided that Gallery 3 (the largest in the Academy and traditionally used for the display of work by Royal Academicians and Honorary RAs) will be hung in the style of a ‘salon hang’.

This will be a unique presentation of recent and new work of all sizes by both artists from open submission and from the Academicians. The aim is to exploit the grandeur of the Academy’s principal room with a memorably dense and rich visual experience.

Taking advantage of all available hanging space, paintings will be hung from the dado rail to the picture rail. The ambition of the Committee is that by the careful arrangement of the hang, each work will be properly seen and ‘read’ in its space, and that the cumulative effect - which will have echoes of Summer Exhibitions of past years - will be to infuse the gallery with life and energy, providing a central focus to the exhibition and contrasting dramatically with other more sparsely-hung rooms.

This year the Architecture Room will be located in Gallery VI and the Architecture Members hanging this gallery, Piers Gough RA and Alan Stanton RA, are keen to receive modestly sized works in the usual media – models, drawings and high quality photographs.

As in previous years, a major work of sculpture will be presented as part of the Summer Exhibition in the Annenberg Courtyard.

CULTURAL DETRITUS

KOUNOSUKE KAWAKAMI,
KENTARO KOBUKE, TOM LEIGHTON

26 March – 1 May 2010
Private View Thursday 25 March 6-8 pm
Pippy Houldsworth, 50 Pall Mall Deposit
124-128 Barlby Road, London W10 6BL

New works by London-based artists Kounosuke Kawakami, Kentaro Kobuke, and Tom Leighton.Ostensibly at odds with each other - both technically and conceptually - these artists nonetheless succeed in an unlikely union. Each depicts subjects from our real world, whilst simultaneously remaining bound up with the world of the unknown. Utilising the realms of fantasy, abstraction and imagination, these artists convey a deeply realistic viewpoint, revealing something profound about our own situations.

Originals 10

I-MYU Projects presents BAROCK PLASTIK an explosive group show of ten artists collectively engaged in sweeping explorations of the hyper real. Locating opposing attitudes of aspiration and displacement the artists navigate both the repressed urban and the burgeoning placidness of the remote and removed outdoors.

Elaborate contortions of folkloric landscape and outlandish universes court a collective consciousness of the elsewhere within the here-and-now. BAROCK PLASTIK draws on the materialistic and visual excess of the Baroque while pointing resolutely to a contemporary bridging point of new Americana, caught between unapologetic nostalgic resolve and fresh Presidential sway.

Tereza Buskova’s photographs configure ritualistic narrative where androgynistic sexuality is neutralised by ostentatious dress and Geisha-white. Toshiaka Hicosaka presents erased and reduced landscapes, enforcing the selective and arbitrary nature of decision-making, the works strive for an unobtainable core of reason. Yutaka Inagawa’s paintings contrast ornamental elements of tree and vegetation against flat painted grounds while Kounosuke Kawakami locates panoptical architectural elements in dislocated and impenetrable landscapes. Kengo Kito’s presents an excessively large helium balloon, a self-sustained hovering entity, while Kentaro Kobuke ’s intimate works describe a patchwork of normality that sit against the fantastical urban landscapes of Tom Leighton’s mirrored and folded impossible realities. Further informing a site of theatrical performance Stine Ljunedalh’s photographs disclose a latent shadow of self, transformation and disguise while Akiko Takizawa’s empty interiors preside over the lost lives, objects and histories withheld within their rich tonal contrast.
